The full-time week changes the hourly rate and every pro rata figure. Check the job advert or contract. The same £50,000 at three common full-time weeks:

37.5 hours full time, 25 hours a week£33,333(£25.64/h)
40 hours full time, 25 hours a week£31,250(£24.04/h)
35 hours full time, 25 hours a week£35,714(£27.47/h)

How this is worked out

pro rata salary = £50,000 × your hours ÷ full-time hours

Example: £50,000 × 25 ÷ 37.5 = £33,333.33 a year. Monthly is that ÷ 12, weekly is ÷ 52. The hourly rate is £50,000 ÷ 52 ÷ 37.5 = £25.64.

Holiday follows the same fraction. Part-time staff get the same 5.6 weeks of statutory leave, measured in their own working days: 3 days a week gives 5.6 × 3 = 16.799999999999997 days. The holiday entitlement calculator gives your exact figure.

Whatever the sum says, the hourly rate must not fall below the National Minimum Wage for your age (£12.71 for 21 and over from 1 April 2026). Current rates are on gov.uk.

£50,000 pro rata: common questions

Is £50,000 pro rata the same as £50,000 a year?

No. "£50,000 pro rata" means £50,000 is the full-time salary and you get the share that matches your hours. On 25 hours against a 37.5-hour week you would earn £33,333 a year, not £50,000. You only get the full £50,000 if you work the full-time hours.

How much is £50,000 pro rata for 3 days a week?

£50,000 × 3 ÷ 5 = £30,000 a year. That is £2,500 a month or £577 a week before tax, assuming full time is 5 days.

Does pro rata pay change my hourly rate?

No. The hourly rate stays the same and only the number of paid hours changes. £50,000 for a 37.5-hour week is £25.64 an hour whether you work 37.5 hours or 20. Paying part-time staff a lower hourly rate for the same job may be unlawful less favourable treatment.
