The full-time week changes the hourly rate and every pro rata figure. Check the job advert or contract. The same £80,000 at three common full-time weeks:

37.5 hours full time, 25 hours a week£53,333(£41.03/h)
40 hours full time, 25 hours a week£50,000(£38.46/h)
35 hours full time, 25 hours a week£57,143(£43.96/h)

How this is worked out

pro rata salary = £80,000 × your hours ÷ full-time hours

Example: £80,000 × 25 ÷ 37.5 = £53,333.33 a year. Monthly is that ÷ 12, weekly is ÷ 52. The hourly rate is £80,000 ÷ 52 ÷ 37.5 = £41.03.

Holiday follows the same fraction. Part-time staff get the same 5.6 weeks of statutory leave, measured in their own working days: 3 days a week gives 5.6 × 3 = 16.799999999999997 days. The holiday entitlement calculator gives your exact figure.

Whatever the sum says, the hourly rate must not fall below the National Minimum Wage for your age (£12.71 for 21 and over from 1 April 2026). Current rates are on gov.uk.

£80,000 pro rata: common questions

Is £80,000 pro rata the same as £80,000 a year?

No. "£80,000 pro rata" means £80,000 is the full-time salary and you get the share that matches your hours. On 25 hours against a 37.5-hour week you would earn £53,333 a year, not £80,000. You only get the full £80,000 if you work the full-time hours.

How much is £80,000 pro rata for 3 days a week?

£80,000 × 3 ÷ 5 = £48,000 a year. That is £4,000 a month or £923 a week before tax, assuming full time is 5 days.

Does pro rata pay change my hourly rate?

No. The hourly rate stays the same and only the number of paid hours changes. £80,000 for a 37.5-hour week is £41.03 an hour whether you work 37.5 hours or 20. Paying part-time staff a lower hourly rate for the same job may be unlawful less favourable treatment.
